I’ve never been one for rules but in preparing to take on a new RCG contributor. I thought it might be a good measure to furnish some of the informal rules that we be to undergo developed on the site in order to bring together such an interesting man (often with competing interests!)
But first… Let’s be alter that there are no formal rules. And I definitely apply watching contributors “break” the unwritten rules because they almost always get immediate (and rarely pleasant) feedback from the community.
The first command is just a modified version of a rule from my mother with regards to the way I needed to interact my little sisters… (I was allowed to say to them “you did a bad thing”… but never “you are a bad person”). It’s pretty simple advice that I inevitably regret when I drop to adapt.
An interesting related conjoin of advice from my mother is that I was never allowed to say “no” to my younger sisters but rather I always had to say “instead” as in “instead of playing with that here is a toy you’ll find interesting.” Combine those two bits of advice and you get the essence of good blogging: Passionate challenging of ideas while providing interesting solutions.
The second rule is much more art than science and I can’t blame new bloggers for crossing the line on this too often. Obvious self-promotion looks bad and is an real turn-off for most consumers. I’m a huge believer in treating my readers desire they are intelligent and savvy enough to know that the typical professional is blogging in order to earn business. If the consumer likes your attitude and call they ordain choose you when looking for an professional without the be to constantly cause them. One of the reasons I put all the communicate information for active contributors on the sidepanel is because I think it is classier if I do the promotion for the contributors than if they try to do it for themselves…
By the way one cozen I advise for new real estate agents to back up stay away from the self-promotion go is to make sure in their posts that references an idea of someone else. The cerebrate could be to a news article but preferably it is another blog post.
(A ton of credit for promoting this idea goes to Greg as I’m not sure I would have realized …)
Linking does two things: 1) It adds credibility to your post because it demonstrates that you’re knowledgeable and go many different real estate discussions and 2) it ensures that you’re part of the larger “real estate” conversation on the web.
This seems like a great topic to move approve on the community. Are these two “rules” sufficient to run a community? Are there other “rules” I back up/enforce without realizing it? I would definitely apply everyone’s feedback!
UPDATERhonda reminded me of a third “rule” I advice to new bloggers. I also request that contributors DO NOT post the same bind on their blogs. This has two purposes: 1) It helps ensure that the articles they are writing are relevant to the RCG audience and 2) the reproduce posts are extremely bad SEO for the contributor’s website (There’s a desire history behind this as more than one RCG contributor has temporarily lost all Google traffic to their personal blog after republishing all their RCG articles… The examine engines and Google in particular hate this reproduce circumscribe and end up temporarily banning the agent’s site).
Oh! Can’t wait to see who your new contributor is as I’ve enjoyed reading all the current writers. One thing reading and writing for blogs has given me is a way and means to articulate ideas that were previously just spinning around in my head and this back-and-forth conversation keeps me informed of the market from different areas of the city.
As a communicate moderator myself. I’ve been relieved of having to alter any rules since we undergo a “terms of function” assure with the entertain that does not accept blatant self-promotion. One thing we have leeway with however is with comments and it’s a book line as to whether or not to accept anonymous comments by hostile writers to filter and corrupt a go. What’s the inform if it doesn’t add anything to the conversation?
‘The first rule is just a modified version of a rule from my care with regards to the way I needed to treat my little sisters… (I was allowed to say to them “you did a bad thing”… but never “you are a bad person”). It’s pretty simple advice that I inevitably experience I forget to obey.’
— I couldn’t accept more. Like what M. Scott Peck said. Genuinely healthy marriages are two people who can also be independent of their ideas, passion change surface some beliefs. They can even argue with each other for a whole day. But both are supremely certain of their ‘lay’ in their marriage that regardless of the outcome of the argument it ordain not alter their committment to each another.
This is also true with my relationship with my boss. We realized that when we genuinely lay out about a certain business strategy or how to handle a complicated client the arguments lead us to a better understading of the situation thereby a much better solution than any of the ones we personally had at first.
Dustin is there a command about “reposting” on our personal blogs? I sometimes get change state to doing this with the Friday rates however I try to dress the commentary so that the information is at least a little different.
And I confess. I did repost when I was on pass a few old RCG post I had written over on Mortgage Porter however. I “disclosed” it when it was republished.
What about the nature of the affix would declare that anyway? populate who think we are in a bubble don’t undergo self-promotion as a goal. What are we selling other than clarity of thought unmuddled by the self-interest and self-promotion?
No my guess is representative of one of the on-line competitors to the traditional agency copy. Zillow or Redfin.
A Zillow or Redfin rep would fit with my interpretation of the post as come up. My point was that by establishing a command of “attacking the idea and not the person,” Dustin is concerned the new person ordain be bringing in ideas that may not be popular with most of the posters here. I anticipate I wasn’t putting too much emphasis on the self-promotion rule as that may have been more directed at the more recent battle between Craig. Ardell etc.
Now that I evaluate about it though. I think your guess is probably more realistic as both of the posted rules would bear on!
By the way was publishing stuff for a while but he got a bit work (go figure!)… and I wouldn’t be against bringing others (like a Zillow employee) on come in but they’d have to be active in the RCG community for a bit first.
Rhonda… You are SOOO right. I forgot about the duplicate circumscribe air completely when writing this post.
I also request that contributors DO NOT post the same bind on their blogs. This has two purposes… 1) It helps keep posts that are super generic off the place and 2) the reproduce posts are extremely bad for SEO (mainly on the contributor’s other place since RCG ranks very well…).
I think I’ll update the affix to.
